MECHANICAL TRANSMISSION (c)

“You’re unexpectedly called in to work and the only car available for the short 5 mile drive is the old, manual transmission one with the bad clutch. You’re not too good at driving this type of car but realize you have to get in to work and figure you can manage the short trip. (Shoot this part from outside car) – You get in and start it up but when you go to put it in reverse to back up, it won’t go in and starts grinding. (Now shoot this part from inside the car with shots of your face and especially your hands/nails gripping and pulling on the gearstick). You struggle with 2 hands, trying many times to get it in reverse, grinding gears as you try, until finally it goes in and you back out. Now when you try to get it in 1st gear, the same thing happens and you again struggle with 2 hands grinding gears as you try. It finally goes in and you’re on your way, but 2nd and 3rd gears result in the same challenges, difficult shifting and gear grinds. You struggle and finally come to an intersection. You start across the intersection and the car dies. You quickly start it up, but when you go to put it in 1st, the gearstick jams and won’t budge. You struggle frantically with both hands, desparately trying to get it in gear before the traffic comes. As you struggle you say: “the gears are jammed; the gears are jammed; i can’t move the stick; they’re jammed!” As you keep struggling, you keep saying this out loud. Finally, using all your might, you force the stick into 1st gear, move out of the intersection, and are on your way.”
